End of year functions

Wow, did we have a fun filled evening at the Idols inspired Three Cities annual end of year parties which saw clients and staff singing their way to stardom in a karaoke themed evening. Held around the country, Durban was the first to see its guests belting out popular tunes and the laughs that the songs invariably produced, and then followed Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Decorated in a colour scheme of black and white approximately one hundred guests were hosted at each venue and prizes were awarded for the best and worst singers. In Durban, Riverside Hotel General Manager Steve van Greunen introduced the evening’s entertainment by singing Frank Sinatra’s New York, New York, while celebrity judges at the various functions consisted of Darren Scott from East Coast Radio fame, former rugby star Kabous van der Westhuizen, comedian Marc Lottering and well known presenter Marius Roberts.

It was a lovely evening that was enjoyed by everyone present, and most people returned to work the next day feeling more than a little tired!

Alpine eath hosts Harley cycle rally

Most of us dream of jumping on the back on a Harley Davidson and letting the wind blow through our hair as we wind our way down quaint country roads.

I got to do just that when Alpine Heath Resort hosted the Harley Davidson cycle club’s rally for an entire weekend during the month of October. Hosted by the 1000 Hills HOG Harley Group, the Clearwater ladies and men rode down to the Northern Berg from Gauteng and met up with them at Alpine Heath.

Approximately 34 motorbikes with around 50 riders made the 450km trip down while marshals, wives and girlfriends also joined on the trip preferring to follow by motor vehicle in convoy. Riders arrived in high spirits at the resort despite being damp due to rainy weather and received a warm welcome from the hosts and organizers. The evening saw everyone enjoy a festive dinner party where the theme was a “priests and prostitutes” party. The next morning, following a delicious buffet breakfast many of the rally goers opted to ride out to Clarence for the rather long 170 km run.

The evenings dinner meal was again a festive occasion filled with much camaraderie and laughs. On Sunday morning, the Alpine staff and I bid all Harley riders a farewell as they made their way back home.

Zululand Tree Lodge renovations

I decided to find out how the renovations at Zululand Tree Lodge are coming along and it seems that they’re well underway and are set for completion in March 2008. Public areas such as the bar, reception and restaurant are 80% finished and are set to be open by mid-December.

Guest rooms are undergoing renovations with some gaining new bathrooms, décor and sliding doors whilst others are being enlarged and equipped with air conditioning. The entrance water feature has been restored and is now fed with a constant supply of water and a new gate leading onto the reserve from the N2 is being constructed to add to a more impressive feel.

There will no longer be any traffic proceeding past Safari Lodge . I'm sure that most of you are as excited as I am to see the final result next year.

I’m just bursting with pride as two of our finest Durban based hotels have been awarded the highly coveted Wine List Awards from Diners Club. The Royal Hotel received the prestigious Award of Excellence, while the Riverside Hotel was presented with a Gold Award.

Wow! I visited the Riverside Hotel and Spa the other day and I was amazed at the transformation of the newly refurbished rooms. Earthy browns, pale creams and rich burgundy giving the hotel a modern, sophisticated atmosphere that creates a comforting home away from home.

All rooms should be completed by March 2008 and guests will be delighted with the transformation. An impressive entrance from Northway Road is underway and should be completed any day now.

JATINGA – TURNS ONE YEAR

Jatinga Country Lodge hosted an amazing first year birthday party to celebrate being with the Three Cities Group for an entire year. The beautiful gardens provided the perfect backdrop for the cocktail party which hosted local guests, tour operators and staff from nearby establishments.

Candles and flares burning bright lit up the lower deck and created a festive atmosphere and warm ambiance. A live band provided the evening’s entertainment while palates and taste buds were enticed with magnificent cuisine. The evening was also a lovely opportunity for Jatinga to thank Arthur Collett for his involvement with managing the operations as he has now handed the duties over to colleague and fellow operations manager Ian Armstrong.

Feathers Deli and Halfway House overlooking the putting green serves light meals and snacks as well as offering deli food items, and serves magnificent English breakfasts for all residents.

The Upgrades are now well on its way, and we have very short deadlines to meet.
We are doing our outmost not to inconvenience guest, but unfortunately we will have some complaints as there will always be guest and some of the work is unfortunately very noisy.

I noticed we have had a lot of cancellations as well due to the upgrades, regular groups that always pick up has not been materializing, and I believe they are afraid the guest might lodge complaints and or claims due to our construction.

Please assist us by advising all your clients of the upgrades as we don’t want to loose clients because of the upgrades, we should be using this positively to build a better client base, based on the upgrades ultimately producing a better product.

GAME VIEWING WITH A DIFFERENCE

Lunchtimes have become fun times at Victoria Falls Safari Lodge recently with the “Vulture Table” activity proving to be a real hit with guests.

The view of Vultures swooping in for a feast on what has been left for them at the lodge’s on-site waterhole, captivates our guests and leaves them with a sense of having been at one with nature for a while.

The Tawny Eagle and the occasional hyena often make an appearance to feed with the vultures during these times, making the whole affair a rather fascinating feeding frenzy to watch.

Hyenas have also been making almost nightly appearances while guests enjoy their dinner at the Makuwa Kuwa Restaurant, situated above the popular waterhole.

NEW MD FOR VICTORIA FALLS SAFARI LODGE

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Glenn Stutchbury as Managing Director Designate for Victoria Falls Safari Lodge.

Glenn is one of Zimbabwe’s top hoteliers with over 20 years experience in the industry, the most recent being that of Regional Operations and Commercial Director for Meikles Africa. He joins the group at an exciting time and will take over from current Managing Director Ross Kennedy, who will soon become the group’s CEO.

WELLNESS DAY AT SELBORNE HOTEL, SPA AND GOLF RESORT

Friday the 17th of August meant a day out of the office for about twenty five people and one giraffe who were being treated to a “Wellness Day” at the Selborne Hotel, Spa and Golf Resort. An assortment of us who ranged from the travel trade, governmental departments and media assembled outside the Royal Hotel early in the morning and departed for the forty five minute drive down the South Coast to visit the idyllic golf resort.

Being greeted by General Manager Mark Enslin who was attired in gym shorts and a vest was the first indication that a normal site-inspection was not on the cards! Visitors were treated to a leisurely stroll (or gallop in my case) along the paved roads down to a tranquil spot overlooking one of the many dams where they were met with a cooler box filled to the brim with delicious cool ice-creams.

The walk back was interrupted by a fun aerobics session which required participation from everyone and involved many uncoordinated people and giraffes bumping into one another! Lunch was held at the leisurely private “beach club”, where champagne welcomed us and salad rolls were the order of the day. Sitting on blankets in the sun next to the sparkling swimming pool and no less than ten meters away from the wooden path leading onto the beach gave us all the perfect opportunity to mingle and enjoy the afternoon nattering away.

This delightfully informal approach was the perfect opportunity for Selborne to showcase all it has to offer as well as giving all who attended the chance to experience it first-hand.

GOLFING AT PHAKALANE

The General Manager of Phakalane Golf Estate Hotel Resort invited me to hone my skills in a round of golf with him last week. Driving a white golf ball down the centre fairway on Phakalane Golf Estate Hotel Resort is something I will remember for years to come.

Featuring pristine greens, white bunkers and nature in abundance, this golf course of international standards designed by Douw van der Merwe of the DDV Design Golf Group is a pleasure to play. You can only imagine what others thought of the pair of us – one lanky giraffe gripping her hooves around a putter!

Completed in 2002 after only two years of design and construction, Phakalane Golf Course which comes complete with 15 dams and 75 bunkers provided a challenging yet satisfying course on which to test my handicap. It boasts the largest pro-shop in Botswana which stocks all leading brands (although there wasn’t much to fit a giraffe), as well as a magnificent driving range and putting green.

Luxurious locker rooms for both men and women with hot showers soothed away all my aches and pains after our tough game. Feathers Deli and Halfway House overlooking the putting green serves light meals and snacks as well as offering deli food items, and serves magnificent English breakfasts for all residents.

A few pints in the pub was the perfect way to end off a tough day on the golf course and I thought there was no place better to this in than the Office Bar which is set in the perfect horseshoe shape to encourage friendly banter amongst golfers and giraffe alike.

Accommodation at Phakalane is available in either fully furnished, self-catering golf chalets or magnificent villa’s situated on the 18th green. To put the cherry on the top I enjoyed a fine meal at Drotsky’s fine dining restaurant which overlooks the main dam on the estate and serves mouth-watering cuisine in an elegant atmosphere.

SAFARI LODGE TRIUMPHS ONCE MORE

Victoria Falls Safari Lodge has once again been voted Zimbabwe’s ‘Best Safari Lodge’ by AZTA (Association of Zimbabwe Travel Agents).

This is the eleventh consecutive year that the lodge has been honoured with this award, reflecting peer recognition of the effort, commitment and service/quality delivery that is achieved at this world class resort.

Last week Friday’s AZTA awards ceremony also saw Victoria Falls Safari Lodge receive a Special Award for its contribution to conservation and the environment. The “Green Trophy” was donated by the Zimsun Leisure Group and was awarded to the lodge for its contribution towards conservation with specific reference to the spearheading and coordinating of the Victoria Falls Anti Poaching Unit.

The Anti Poaching Unit was established in 1999 by Victoria Falls Safari Lodge and local safari operator Charles Brightman. Today the unit consists of a 13 man team and patrols an area of fifty square kilometers. The unit has to date captured several hundred mammal and wood poachers and removed over 17 000 snares from the region.

Says Victoria Falls Safari Lodge’s Managing Director Ross Kennedy, “We are proud and privileged to be part of this wonderful destination, with an outstanding team of management and employees driving this ongoing success. UBIZANE REFURBISHMANT UPDATES

Major renovations are in progress at Zululand Safari Lodge. We are proud to announce all twenty-seven chalets are undergoing a complete face-lift with new linen, curtains, rugs and furniture giving a rich finish to the lodge.

The bathrooms are being re-modelled with additional new fittings and outdoor showers to name a few. The outdoor patio area will have its roof line extended with new windows, sliding doors and patio furniture giving a new look to the existing structure.

The swimming pool area has been totally revamped and landscaped with the addition of a smart poolside bar. The restaurant roof line has been extended to create an indoor/outdoor dining ambience, promising a memorable dining experience. A new waterhole in front of the restaurant adds to the Safari Experience.

The floors in the interior of the restaurant have been redone and a marvelous buffet area has been built in. All pathways have been resurfaced and fitted with walkway lanterns, adding to the ambiance of the bush surroundings. An authentic boma seating 40 guests is also a long awaited addition to Zululand Safari Lodge.

A bush dining experience has been created within the adjoining fever tree forest adding a unique variety to guest’s experience. The Ubizane Wildlife Reserve are reintroducing various game species to improve the eco-sustainability.

I was honoured to attend the opening of the Royal Palm Hotel situated on the prestigious Palm Boulevard, just 20 minutes outside of Durban. Upon arrival, I was struck by the friendliness of all staff and how helpful and in-the-know they all were. Walking into the foyer, you are simply awe-struck, and have to marvel at the sheer magnificence of the interior. Situated directly in the centre, with fantastic DISH restaurant on your left, you look up spanning all 5 floors above you. Modern and eclectic are the words that spring foremost to my mind.

Being treated to a site-inspection, I was further struck by just how much detail and planning has gone into making each of the 94 apartments luxurious. From the funky signature chairs that are placed in each room, to the hot chocolate for that personal touch. The textured beige wallpaper gives it a slightly different feel to any other hotel you have visited before. The apartments range from single studios up to two bedroom apartments, and on the top floor are the opulent penthouses.
Being just a stone’s throw away from the Gateway Theatre of Shopping is the cherry on the top, as there is an entire shopping mecca on your doorstep. Conference facilities are available through the 1 on 1 Events Centre in Gateway which is a sophisticated events and social venue which has the capacity to cater for up to 1000 guests in four different venues.

The 31st of May saw the Three Cities Group launch Clifftop Exclusive Safari Hideaway to media partners, travel trade, and celebrities alike at a glittering function at The Saxon Hotel in Johannesburg. Guests were welcomed to the elegant affair by exotic cocktails and delicious finger foods.

Thereafter, Alan Vels, Managing Director of the Three Cities Group, gave a few words in which he shared his optimism about the lodge.

The 2007 regional young chefs’ competition attracts junior chefs from many leading hotels and restaurants from around the world. This year, in the South African competition, the Three Cities Hospitality Group enjoyed much success as two of their properties’ junior chefs sampled a taste of success. Jason Goldsmith, Sous Chef at Plettenberg Park Hotel in the Western Cape and Nkosikhona Manqule, chef de partie, of the Riverside Hotel and Spa in KwaZulu Natal both competed in their respective regions and dazzled onlookers with their exceptional skills in culinary excellence.

Presented with a mystery bag of ingredients, chefs were required to create an innovative and delicious three-course meal. Nkosikhona created three scrumptious dishes including his main course, which comprised of a pan-fried fillet of pork with turnips and potato caramelised onion mash with baked ricotta and spinach, which was accompanied by a fusion of port and thyme. Thereafter, an intoxicating lemon barvoris with a poached pear flam proved to be the perfect finish to this mouth-watering meal. Jason tantalised taste buds with a duo of trout and kingklip, to start. This was served on fresh garden greens with a lemon and white wine sauce. For dessert, he prepared apple and plum sponges drizzled with a honey anglaise.

Both chefs displayed high levels of professionalism and creativity and as a result enjoyed the sweet taste of success. Nkosikhona came in third place, Jason has qualified for the South Africa National competition, and should he be successful at the

Nationals later on this month, he will represent South Africa at the international competition in Germany in 2008. These great achievements suggest that these culinary wizards will continue whetting our appetites for more to come in the future.

It is all about food and wine at Jatinga Country Lodge.

Recently hosting a Boschendal Estate wine tasting at the lodge, complimenting cuisine was at its best prepared by renowned lodge chef, Gareth Tideswell.

A relaxed and warm atmosphere welcomed 20 guests, and afforded them with an opportunity to learn more about the wines from Boschendal cellar master, J.C. Bekker.

Tasting included the not yet commercially released Boschendal Sauvignon Blanc, which was served with a salad magdalene and the prelude of poached fillet of kingklip, accompanied by the 2006 Chardonnay, which has recently been commended as one of the ten best Burgandies.

The 2001 Grand reserve was enjoyed with the main course, comprising a superb beef fillet. To top a perfect evening off, orange bavarois served with a 12-year-old Balvenie single malt whiskey ensured the evening was a great success.

1ON1 NETWORKING BREAKFAST

1on1 recently enjoyed yet another successful networking breakfast with KwaZulu Natal corporates with a social and fun event. Snug chair covers and white tablecloths accom-panied by assorted mini breakfast pastries presented with preserves and butter, welcomed 160 guests.

The guests also enjoyed a plated breakfast menu comprising of delicious dishes such as stewed apples on nutmeg scented natural yoghurt with sultana raisin compote and granola praline to start, followed by rolled bacon skewered with grilled boerewors, pearl onions, mushrooms and tomato upon smoked paprika spiced cheesy scrambled eggs.

Aaron McIIroy provided the crowd with hilarious entertainment, and thereafter lucky draw prizes took place. WILDLIFE RELOCATION AT UBIZANE

The 21st of May saw Zululand Tree and Safari Lodge embark upon some exciting game capturing including 5 giraffes, 36 Nyalas, 1 rhino and 100 impala.

Guests staying in lodge were able to be part of this unique experience and were transported to the capture areas to get a glimpse of the activities. Further-more the lodge has introduced 1 new male giraffe, 6 new male Nyalas as well as 6 male impalas.

The proceeds of the game sold will go towards the purchasing of 5 Buffalo, should the reserve be successful in obtaining a permit to introduce them to the reserve.

THE PENINSULA SUPPORTS ANIMAL RIGHTS

The Said Foundation is an organization that protects and cares for animal rights. The foundation strives towards saving animals in distress by demonstrating compassion, while simultaneously targeting and empowering communities through education, nutrition, job creation and sustainable development.

The Peninsula All-Suite Hotel is one of the charity’s hugest supporters and on May 30th, the hotel hosted a function in honour of the Said Foundation’s new corporate identity.

Guests attending the function included sponsors supporters and volunteers as well as prestigious guests such as Mayor Helen Zille’s Mayoral Committee Members. This is certainly an indication that the city of Cape Town is showing an interest in the type of work the SAID foundation does.

THREE CITIES PARTAKE IN A RALLY TO READ

April 5th saw the ‘Rally to Read’ take place for the 10th time this year since its inception in 1998 and Three Cities’ Cape Town properties, had the pleasure of being part of the event this year.

An investment of nearly R26 million going towards improving literacy levels for young children in South Africa’s remote rural schools has been seen so far.

Accompanied by a team of 40 4x4 vehicles, rally convoys visited Piekeneerskloof Mountain lodge to meet up with renowned corporate companies such as Telkom, Old Mutual, Investec and Financial Mail. Thereafter, the convoys embarked upon their journey to small, lesser known parts of South Africa and delivered educational tools and supplies to underprivileged children.

Children from schools including Breevlei Primary and PW De Bruin, to name but a few, chose to recite poetry, read stories in English, Afrikaans and their home language, and gave the team a glimpse at how their contributions make such an immediate powerful and positive impact. Those children who struggle with daily emotional, physical, and mental handicaps, chose to sing and dance, showing their appreciation.

Similarly, the weekend of the 19th May saw the Three Cities head office in Durban experience another rally to read within the KwaZulu Natal area, more specifically Kokstad Harding Matatiele. The reputable hospitality group was part of a convoy of 45, which later split up in to groups of two.

The Three Cities team visited two schools, Leipaardskop and Vogelvlei – this particular trip would ultimately disclose how destiny works in mysterious ways. Leipaardskop is a converted barn, which accommodates 227 pupils, and Vogelvlei comprises of four tiny buildings, accommodating 167 pupils. It was here that the team was very moved by a presentation of an ex-Vogelvlei student who revealed that he was aptly studying Hotel management at Varsity College. Chris Johnson, of Three Cities, saw this as an opportunity to help and has offered the group’s services to host Kabelo's internship.

This annual rally once again proved to be an enriching, emotional and educational experience for everyone involved. The project is a true testament of how educational tools and supplies have such a positive impact on the paths one takes in life.

A NEW ACTIVITY FOR MABULA GAME LODGE

Mabula Game Lodge has done it again, and launched yet another new activity to its already diverse bow of activities available to guests. Guests can exercise their archery skills under the guidance of Mabula Game Lodge’s talented game rangers.

The introduction of archery is yet another way that the lodge caters to all of their guests’ needs. Game rangers escort guests from the Wildlife centre to an empty patch of grass at the main lodge, less than a kilometre away, to enjoy an archery adventure. Equipped with recurred bows, guests shoot at a target approximately 10 to 15m away. The target comprises of two wooden panels accompanied by foam and a circular paper target. The activity works on a point system whereby the centre, the bull, is worth 30 points, and the points decrease as the bows hit further away from the core.

The new archery activity accommodates a maximum of eight people at a time, and offers those taking part an opportunity to embark on some friendly competition. The addition of archery to other activities offered, including hot air balloon safaris, bush walks, horse riding, game viewing, land rover safaris and eco-Adventure Trails, ensures that there is never a dull a moment at Mabula Game Lodge.

The activity is open twice daily at 10h00 and 14h00 and is proving to be another fun activity to partake in at Mabula, ultimately making this luxurious Lodge the perfect place to explore hidden skills and talents.
